ARTICLE

A cash back card is most useful when it rewards the things you already buy. If groceries, gas and online shopping are regular parts of your budget, the American Express Blue Cash Everyday® Card is worth a look.

It has no annual fee and earns 3% cash back in three spending categories, each with its own annual limit. But the store you shop at matters, and the welcome offer deserves a careful read before you apply.

Here is how the card works, where its rewards can be useful and what to check on the referral page.

Referral disclosure: This article includes an American Express referral link. The referring Card Member may receive compensation if you are approved and get the Card. American Express determines approval, offer amounts and eligibility.

Blue Cash Everyday at a glance

  • Annual fee: $0.
  • U.S. supermarkets: 3% cash back on the first $6,000 in eligible purchases per calendar year, then 1%.
  • U.S. online retail purchases: 3% on the first $6,000 in eligible purchases per calendar year, then 1%.
  • U.S. gas stations: 3% on the first $6,000 in eligible purchases per calendar year, then 1%.
  • Other eligible purchases: 1% cash back.
  • Reviewed welcome offer: As high as $200 after $2,000 in eligible purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership, subject to eligibility.

The $6,000 limits are separate for each 3% category. Spending by Additional Card Members counts toward the same account limits.

Where the cash back can make a difference

Groceries at qualifying U.S. supermarkets

If you regularly shop at qualifying supermarkets, this category can provide steady rewards without changing your routine.

For example, spending $300 a month on qualifying supermarket purchases totals $3,600 a year. At 3%, that would earn $108 in Reward Dollars before considering other purchases, welcome rewards, interest or fees.

The catch is that grocery purchases are not all treated alike. Amex excludes superstores, warehouse clubs, convenience stores and meal-kit delivery services from the supermarket category. Think about where you buy groceries, not just how much you spend on them.

Physical goods bought from U.S. online retailers

The online retail category can be useful for purchases such as clothing or household goods from qualifying U.S. retailers. Payment must be made online and identified by the merchant as an internet transaction.

It does not cover everything you pay for on a website. Travel, entertainment and other services are excluded, as are purchases in specified categories including restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations.

Ordering online and paying at the store does not qualify for the online retail bonus. Using a digital wallet at an in-store checkout does not turn the purchase into an online transaction either.

Gas at qualifying U.S. stations

Regular fill-ups may earn 3% when the purchases qualify for Amex’s U.S. gas station category. Gasoline sold by supermarkets, superstores and warehouse clubs is excluded.

For all three categories, merchant codes and the transaction information Amex receives affect the reward rate. If a purchase earns less than expected, check its classification rather than assuming every similar purchase will qualify.

How the welcome offer up to $200 works

The referral terms reviewed for this article describe a welcome offer as high as $200 after $2,000 in eligible purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership.

That is a maximum offer amount, not a promise that every approved applicant receives $200. After you submit your application, Amex tells you whether you qualify and the exact offer amount before you accept the Card, if approved.

Before applying, compare the spending requirement with your existing budget. Dividing $2,000 across six months comes to about $333.34 a month. You do not have to spend that amount each month; it is simply a way to see whether the total fits your normal purchases.

Purchases that do not count

The spending requirement is based on eligible purchases of goods and services, minus returns and other credits. The reviewed welcome offer excludes:

  • Gift cards and purchases or reloads of prepaid cards.
  • Person-to-person payments.
  • Balance transfers and cash advances.
  • Fees and interest charges.
  • Traveler’s checks and other cash equivalents.

Eligible purchases by Additional Card Members can help meet the account’s threshold. Additional Card Members do not receive their own separate welcome offer.

Give yourself some room before the deadline. Card delivery and delays in merchants submitting transactions can shorten the time you have in practice. Returns can also reduce your qualifying spending.

When the welcome reward posts

The supplied terms state that the welcome Reward Dollars are applied 8–12 weeks after the spending threshold is met. Your account must not be past due or cancelled when the reward is posted.

Keep a copy of the offer you accept so you can refer to its amount, spending requirement and timing later.

No annual fee, but other costs still apply

Blue Cash Everyday has a $0 annual fee. That can make it easier to keep the card for everyday purchases, but it does not eliminate borrowing costs or transaction fees.

The supplied pricing disclosure, with variable APRs dated October 2, 2026, lists the following terms:

  • Purchase APR: 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening, followed by a variable 19.74%–28.74% APR based on creditworthiness and other factors.
  • Balance transfer APR: 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on transfers requested within 60 days, followed by a variable 19.74%–28.74% APR.
  • Balance transfer fee: $5 or 3% of each transfer, whichever is greater.
  • Foreign transaction fee: 2.7% of each transaction after conversion to U.S. dollars.
  • Cash advance APR: Variable 28.99%.
  • Cash advance fee: $10 or 5% of each advance, whichever is greater.
  • Late and returned payment fees: Up to $40 each. A penalty APR may apply under the account terms.

Introductory offer eligibility is subject to Amex’s rules. Read the current Rates and Fees during your application; the terms presented there are the ones to use for your decision.

If you expect to carry a balance after the introductory period, estimate the interest cost before focusing on rewards. A few months of interest can reduce or outweigh the cash back you earn.

What you can do with Reward Dollars

Cash back is earned as Reward Dollars. Under the reviewed terms, you can redeem them for statement credits or eligible purchases at Amazon.com checkout with no minimum redemption amount.

To use Reward Dollars at Amazon, you need to link your Card Account to your Amazon account.

A statement credit reduces your balance, but it cannot pay the Minimum Payment Due. You still need to make your required payments.

Eligibility to check before applying

The supplied application terms say this offer is available to qualified U.S. residents age 18 or older. American Express decides whether to approve the application.

You may not qualify for the welcome offer, introductory APR or introductory plan fee offer if you have or have had:

  • Blue Cash Everyday®.
  • Cash Magnet®.
  • Blue Cash Preferred®.
  • Morgan Stanley Blue Cash Preferred® American Express Card.
  • Previous versions of those cards.

Other factors may also affect eligibility, including your history with Amex, balance transfers and the number of credit cards you have opened and closed. Approval for the card does not automatically mean approval for every promotional offer.

This is a U.S. credit card offer. The supplied terms do not make it available to residents of Vietnam simply because they can open the referral link.

Is Blue Cash Everyday a good fit for you?

The card may fit well if you shop at qualifying U.S. supermarkets, make eligible online retail purchases and buy gas at qualifying stations. Its separate category caps leave room to earn rewards across all three areas.

It deserves a closer comparison if you mainly buy groceries at warehouse clubs, spend frequently outside the United States or want a higher reward rate on purchases outside its bonus categories.

Use your recent spending as a starting point. Look at a few months of transactions, identify which purchases would qualify and estimate the rewards. Then account for any interest or fees you expect to pay.

A welcome offer can add value, but the card should still make sense after that offer is over.

Does using this referral guarantee approval?

No. American Express reviews your application and determines approval separately from welcome offer eligibility.
