A free stock offer can sound simple: open an account and collect a reward. With Robinhood, there are a few details worth checking first, especially if the offer reached you through an email or referral link.
This guide explains the main requirements and where to find the current terms. It is information about a promotion, not a recommendation to buy stocks.
What is Robinhood’s free stock offer?
Robinhood’s published new-customer offer provides a reward worth $5–$200 that eligible customers use toward selected stocks. You may receive a fractional share rather than a whole share. The maximum amount is not the typical reward.
Approval and linking a bank account or debit card are required. Check the offer displayed during signup before applying.
Who can apply?
The promotion is intended for eligible new U.S. customers. Robinhood’s general account requirements include:
- Being at least 18 years old.
- Having a valid Social Security Number.
- Having a qualifying legal U.S. residential address.
- Being a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or qualifying visa holder.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee approval. Robinhood reviews applications and may request additional identity documents.
What if you already had an account?
Review the new-customer definition carefully. Previously holding an individual taxable brokerage account can make you ineligible.
How to check and claim the offer
- Read Robinhood’s official reward terms.
- Confirm that the offer applies to your signup.
- Complete the application and any requested verification.
- Follow the account-linking and reward-claim instructions.
Buying a book is not part of the published reward requirements. If an email promotes a book alongside the offer, treat that as a separate purchase.
Understand the restrictions before cashing out
The published signup terms require claiming within 60 days. They also impose a three-trading-day sale restriction and a 30-day restriction on withdrawing the reward’s cash value.
Confirm the terms attached to your reward, because different promotions can have different rules.
How referral links work
A referral link identifies the person who invited you. That person may receive a separate reward if you complete the qualifying steps.
Robinhood distinguishes your signup reward from the referrer’s milestone reward. A successful deposit is required for your signup to count toward the referrer’s milestone. Read both sets of conditions rather than assuming they are identical.
Check fees and account choices
Robinhood describes stock and ETF investing as commission-free, but that does not mean every service or transaction is free. Certain trading and account-service fees can apply.
Robinhood Gold is a separate paid subscription. Review any optional upgrade before accepting it and consult the current fee schedule.
Is the reward a reason to start investing?
Consider whether you want a brokerage account independently of the promotion. A small signup reward does not remove the risk of losing money when investments change in value.
Avoid treating an email’s “buy now” message as a personal investment recommendation. Decide how the account fits your needs before depositing money or placing trades.
